Welcome to Centennial

Mountain Communities Town Council:
Centennial Discussed

By Ken Kearby, President

On Thursday evening, Feb. 20, Greg Medeiros, project manager for Centennial, the proposed master-planned community to be built east of I-5 along Highway 138, met with the Mountain Communities Town Council.

About 20 people attended the meeting, including Millie Jones, Senior Deputy to Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich.

Medeiros explained that Centennial filed its Specific Plan with the County of Los Angeles on that day and that it was a first step in moving the approvals process forward. He explained the smart growth planning concepts being implemented, including providing schools, entertainment and retail facilities as well as jobs within the community so that residents do not have to commute long distances. He also said the meeting was one of many he is holding around the area to gather input for the environmental impact report studies and to gain an understanding of what residents would like to see at Centennial.

The people in attendance at the meeting seemed to like Centennial’s master-planned approach and the fact that it would be made up of villages that include a variety of housing prices and a wide range of recreation, entertainment, and retail facilities. They suggested giving it a small town look and feel with such things as big front porches and garages in back.

Issues cited as concerns were light pollution, increased traffic on 138, water supplies and protection of the aqueduct. Among the group’s suggestions were use of native plants and wildflowers, attraction of clean businesses with well-paying jobs, medical facilities and a system of communication to facilitate cooperation among law enforcement officials in the three counties that come together in this area.

Medeiros said he will be holding additional meetings with the community as part of the ongoing planning process
